1. Buy What You Love
Just as with everything in your home, the things you own should attract you — you ought to love them! Art, specifically, is extremely private, and every piece is meant to evoke an emotion and a feeling and be private to you. Above all, you should truly love the art that you pick, and thus don’t buy anything just because it’s the ideal size or price. Make sure that you love it!
And do not be reluctant to go in another way if you discover something you love. You may not know why you enjoy something, or you may think that it’s out of your comfort zone, but do not let that stop you.
2. Determine Your Scale Size
Picking the right size is crucial, and each circumstance is different, but a general principle is for the artwork to fill 1/2 into 3/4 of their space. For contemporary art, consider going even larger, since this art design lends itself to making a bold statement both regarding the artwork itself, but also the dimensions of the canvas. If large-scale art is not in your budget, consider employing several, smaller pieces of artwork grouped.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general guideline, select your art to complement the shape of this space. Therefore a tall, narrow wall will look best using a portrait vertical orientation with a rectangular shape. Conversely, many people like to hang art above the sofa, which is a long rectangular area, therefore opt for a landscape horizontal orientation in a rectangular form. A significant square wall can accommodate a square piece of artwork, etc. Have a look at the form of the area you’re attempting to fill and select the art of the same form.
4. Determine Your Spacing & Height
If you are creating a gallery with several frames alongside one another, space the frames 1 1/2″ to 2″ apart. Take this dimension into consideration before purchasing your art so you understand how much room you’ll have abandoned for the artwork itself, and therefore, what size to purchase. When it comes to hanging art, if it is hung too large, it may look very awkward and take away in the beauty! Always hang artwork so that the center of this art rests at eye level, around 65″, give or take. When hanging art over a sofa or other piece of furniture, place the base of this frame anywhere from 6″-12″ above the furniture.

5. Go Beyond the Canvas
When searching for art to fill your walls, do not restrict yourself to print or canvas art. There are so many types of objects that work well on walls and function as artwork, like tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique dividers, classic doors, as well as architectural pediments! When shopping on the internet, these types of items are often listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so you might have to correct your look a bit, but be open to each the choices before trying to find the right artwork for your space.

6. Select Your Color Scheme
The color of the artwork that you choose is critical, as it needs to work with your house’s overall color scheme and surrounding decoration. You can choose artwork to blend with your walls, pick up an accent colour, tie your complete colour palette collectively, or even stick out on its more common with contemporary art.
One word of caution: I would refrain from browsing online sites by colour. In my experience, if you filter by colour, you’ll only see a portion of the art available that might have colours that work for your house because if the retailer doesn’t label its colour when they load it in their system, it won’t appear in your search! Also, sometimes, art becomes tagged exclusively by the color of the major image, not the background. So for instance, I was trying to find blue artwork and many pieces were filtered outside that had a blue sky or blue rivers as they are deemed secondary, but for me, these images would match my requirements.
I would have missed it when I had filtered by color!

7. Set the Mood
The disposition of your art will affect the disposition of your room, so be sure to take it into account for the space in which you’ll use it. A beautiful picture depicting a misty mountain might be the perfect size and colour for your space, but if you are hanging it into a kids’ playroom, it might not be the ideal energy for your room.
In all honesty, one of my favorite areas to locate art is HomeGoods, but as you might know with that store, the selection is either hit or miss. They have pieces of sizes and styles, and the prices are unbeatable, but it is only luck if you encounter just the right thing for your house, which explains why I frequently shop online. Here are some of my favourite places to search for artwork, in no specific order.
Again, selecting home art vector is very personal, but the objective is for you to appreciate it and for it to be the right size, shape, and color for your property. Are there any exceptions to the rules above? Obviously! What will life be without a variety?!
