1. Buy What You Love
Just like with everything in your house, things you own should appeal to you — you should love them! Art, in particular, is very private, and every piece is supposed to evoke an emotion and a feeling and be personal to you. Above all, you should really love the artwork that you select, and thus don’t buy anything just because it is the right size or cost. Make sure that you love it!
And don’t be afraid to go in another direction if you find something you love. You might not know why you like something, or you might think it’s out of your comfort zone, however, don’t let that stop you.
2. Determine Your Scale Size
Choosing the right size is key, and every circumstance differs, but a general guideline is for the artwork to fill 1/2 to 3/4 of their space. For modern art, consider going even bigger, as this art style lends itself to creating a bold statement both regarding the artwork itself, but also the dimensions of this canvas. If large-scale art isn’t in your budget, consider employing several, smaller pieces of artwork grouped.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general rule of thumb, select your artwork to complement the shape of this space. Conversely, many people like to hang artwork above the sofa, which is a long rectangular space, therefore opt for a landscape horizontal orientation in a rectangular shape. A big square wall can accommodate a square piece of artwork, and so on. Have a look at the form of the area you’re trying to fill and select the artwork of the same shape.
If you’re creating a gallery using several frames next to one another, space the frames 1 1/2″ to 2″ apart. Take this dimension into consideration before purchasing your art so that you know how much room you will have left for the art itself, and therefore, what size to buy. When it comes to hanging artwork, if it’s hung too high, it can look very awkward and take away from the beauty! Always hang artwork so that the centre of the artwork rests at eye level, around 65″, give or take. When hanging art above a couch or other piece of furniture, place the base of the frame anywhere from 6″-12″ over the furniture.

5. Go Beyond the Canvas
When looking for artwork to fill your walls, don’t limit yourself to canvas or print artwork. There are many types of items that work well on walls and function as art, like tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique dividers, classic doors, and even architectural pediments! When shopping online, these types of items are usually listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so that you might need to adjust your search a bit, but be open to all the options before searching for the right art for your space.

6. Pick Your Color Scheme
The color of this art that you select is essential, as it needs to work with your house’s overall color scheme and surrounding decor. You can select art to combine with your walls, pick up an accent color, tie your complete colour palette together, or perhaps stick out on its more common with contemporary art.
1 word of caution: I’d refrain from surfing online websites by colour. In my experience, if you filter by color, you’ll only see a fraction of the art available that might have colours that work to your home because when the merchant does not label its color when they load it in their system, it won’t show up on your hunt! Additionally, occasionally, art gets labeled only by the color of the major image, not the background. So for instance, I was trying to find blue artwork and many bits were filtered outside that had a blue skies or blue rivers because they are considered secondary, but for me personally, these pictures would fit my requirements.
Would you think this did not show up in my search for”blue”? I would have missed it if I had filtered by colour!

7. Set the Mood
The mood of your artwork will affect the disposition of your area, so make sure you bring it into consideration for the room where you’re going to use it. By way of example, contemporary art is often vibrant and high-energy, foggy riverbanks evoke a sombre atmosphere, animals can be whimsical, etc.. A beautiful canvas depicting a misty mountain might be the perfect size and colour for your space, but if you’re hanging it into a children’s playroom, it might not be the ideal energy for your room.
8. Know Where to Shop
In all honesty, one of my favourite areas to find artwork is HomeGoods, but as you might know with that store, the selection is hit or miss. They have pieces of all sizes and styles, and the rates are unbeatable, but it is just luck if you encounter just the right thing for your home, which explains why I frequently shop online. Here are some of my favorite places to search for art, in no particular order.
Again, selecting home art creative is very personal, but the goal is that you appreciate it and for it to be the right size, shape, and color for your home. Are there any exceptions to the rules above? Obviously! What would life be without some variety?! However, these tips should help get you started in the right direction to place the finishing touches on your area.
