1. Buy What You Love
Just like with everything in your home, the things you have should attract you — you ought to love them! Art, in particular, is very private, and each piece is meant to evoke an emotion and a sense and be private to you. Most importantly, you need to really love the artwork that you pick, so don’t buy anything just because it’s the ideal size or price. Ensure you love it!
And do not be afraid to go in another direction if you discover something you love. You might not know why you like something, or you may think it’s out of your comfort zone, however, don’t let that stop you.
2. Determine Your Scale Size
Choosing the proper size is crucial, and every circumstance is different, but a general principle is for the artwork to fill 1/2 into 3/4 of the space. For contemporary art, look at going even bigger, as this art style lends itself to creating a bold statement both regarding the artwork itself, but also the dimensions of this canvas. If large-scale art is not in your budget, consider using a few, smaller pieces of art grouped.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general rule of thumb, select your art to match the shape of this room. Conversely, many people like to hang art over the couch, which is a long rectangular area, therefore opt for a landscape horizontal orientation at a rectangular form. A significant square wall may accommodate a square piece of art, and so on. Look at the shape of the area you are attempting to fill and select the artwork of the exact same form.
4. Determine Your Spacing & Height
If you’re creating a gallery with several frames alongside one another, distance the frames 1 1/2″ to two ″ apart. Take this measurement into consideration before purchasing your artwork so that you understand how much room you’ll have abandoned for the artwork itself, and so, what size to purchase. If it comes to hanging artwork, if it’s hung too large, it may look very awkward and remove from the beauty! Always hang art so that the centre of the artwork rests at eye level, around 65″, give or take.

5. Move Beyond the Canvas
If you’re looking for art to fill your walls, don’t limit yourself to canvas or print artwork. There are so many types of items that work well on walls and serve as artwork, such as tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique dividers, classic doors, and even architectural pediments! When shopping on the internet, these kinds of things are usually listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so you might have to adjust your look somewhat, but be open to each the options before searching for the ideal art for your space.

6. Select Your Color Scheme
The color of this artwork that you select is essential, as it needs to work with your house’s overall colour scheme and surrounding decoration. It’s possible to select art to blend together with your walls, pick up an accent color, tie your complete colour palette collectively, or perhaps stick out on its more common with modern art.
One word of caution: I’d refrain from browsing online websites by colour. In my experience, if you filter out of colour, you will only see a portion of the artwork available that may have colours that work for your home because if the retailer does not label its color when they load it in their system, it won’t appear on your search! Also, occasionally, art becomes tagged only by the color of the major image, not the background. So for example, I was trying to find blue artwork and many pieces were filtered out that had a blue skies or blue rivers because they are deemed secondary, but for me, those pictures would match my requirements.
I’d have missed it when I had filtered by colour!

7. Set the Mood
The mood of your artwork will affect the disposition of your area, so be sure to take it into consideration for the space in which you’re going to use it. For instance, modern art is often vibrant and high-energy, foggy riverbanks evoke a sombre feeling, critters can be whimsical, etc.. A gorgeous canvas depicting a misty mountain might be the ideal size and color for your area, but if you’re hanging it in a kids’ playroom, it might not be the right energy for your space.
8. Know Where to Shop
In all honesty, one of my favorite areas to locate artwork is HomeGoods, however as you might know with that store, the choice is hit or miss. They have bits of all sizes and styles, and the prices are unbeatable, but it is only luck if you encounter just the correct thing for your house, which explains why I frequently shop online. Here are some of my favourite places to look for artwork, in no specific order.
Again, selecting feeling of home art is quite personal, but the goal is for you to love it and for it to be the right size, shape, and colour for your home. Of course! What would life be without a variety?!
