1. Buy What You Love
Just like with everything in your house, things you own should appeal to you — you ought to love them! Art, specifically, is extremely private, and every piece is meant to evoke an emotion and a sense and be personal to you. Above all, you should truly love the art that you select, so don’t buy anything just because it is the ideal size or price. Ensure you love it!
And don’t be afraid to go in a different direction if you find something you love. You may not know why you like something, or you might think that it’s from your comfort zone, however, don’t let this stop you.
Choosing the proper size is crucial, and each situation is different, but a general principle is for the artwork to fill 1/2 into 3/4 of their space. For modern art, consider going even bigger, since this art style lends itself to creating a bold statement both in terms of the art itself, but also the size of the canvas. If large-scale artwork is not in your budget, consider using a few, smaller pieces of art sprinkled.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general rule of thumb, select your artwork to match the shape of this room. So a tall, narrow wall may look best with a portrait vertical orientation with a rectangular shape. Conversely, many people prefer to hang art above the couch, which can be a long rectangular space, therefore opt for a landscape flat orientation at a rectangular shape. A significant square wall may accommodate a square piece of art, and so on. Have a look at the shape of the space you’re trying to fill and decide on the art of the same shape.
4. Determine Your Spacing & Height
If you’re creating a gallery using several frames next to one another, distance the frames 1 1/2″ to two ″ apart. Take this measurement into consideration before buying your artwork so you know how much room you’ll have abandoned for the art itself, and therefore, what size to buy. When it comes to hanging artwork, if it is hung too large, it may look quite awkward and take away in the beauty! Always hang art so that the center of the art rests at eye level, around 65″, give or take. When hanging art above a sofa or other piece of furniture, place the base of this frame anywhere from 6″-12″ over the furniture.

5. Move Beyond the Canvas
If you’re looking for artwork to fill your walls, don’t limit yourself to print or canvas art. There are many types of objects that work nicely on walls and function as art, such as tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique dividers, vintage doors, as well as architectural pediments! When shopping on the internet, these kinds of things are often listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so that you may have to correct your look somewhat, but be open to all of the options before trying to find the ideal artwork for your space.

6. Select Your Color Scheme
The color of the artwork that you choose is critical, as it ought to work with your home’s overall color scheme and surrounding decor. It’s possible to choose artwork to combine with your walls, pick up an accent color, tie your entire color palette together, or even stand out on its more common with contemporary art.
1 word of caution: I’d refrain from browsing online sites by color. In my experience, if you filter by color, you’ll only see a fraction of the artwork available that may have colors that work for your home because if the merchant does not tag its colour when they load it in their system, it won’t show up in your hunt! Also, occasionally, art becomes labeled exclusively by the color of the major picture, not the background. So for example, I was looking for blue artwork and many bits were filtered outside that had a blue skies or blue rivers because they are considered secondary, but for me personally, those pictures would match my needs.
Can you think this did not show up in my search for”blue”? I’d have missed it if I had filtered by colour!

7. Set the Mood
The mood of your art will impact the disposition of your room, so make sure you bring it into consideration for the room where you’re going to use it. For instance, modern art is often lively and high-energy, foggy riverbanks evoke a sombre feeling, critters can be whimsical, etc.. A beautiful canvas depicting a misty mountain might be the ideal size and colour to your area, but if you’re hanging it in a kids’ playroom, it may not be the ideal energy for your space.
8. Know Where to Shop
In all honesty, one of my favourite places to locate artwork is HomeGoods, however as you may know with that shop, the choice is hit or miss. They have pieces of all sizes and fashions, and the prices are unbeatable, but it’s only luck if you come across just the right thing for your home, which explains the reason why I frequently shop online. Below are a few of my favourite places to look for artwork, in no specific order.
