1. Buy What You Love
Just like with everything in your home, the things you own should appeal to you — you ought to love them! Art, in particular, is very private, and each piece is supposed to evoke an emotion and a sense and be private to you. Above all, you should truly love the art that you select, so don’t buy anything just because it’s the right size or cost. Make sure you love it!
And don’t be afraid to go in another direction if you find something you love. You might not know why you like something, or you might think it’s out of your comfort zone, but do not let that stop you.
Choosing the right size is key, and every situation differs, but a general principle is for the art to fill 1/2 to 3/4 of the space. For contemporary art, look at going even larger, as this art style lends itself to making a bold statement both regarding the artwork itself, but also the size of this canvas. If large-scale artwork isn’t in your budget, consider using several, smaller pieces of art grouped.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general guideline, select your art to complement the shape of the space. Conversely, many people prefer to hang artwork over the sofa, which can be a long rectangular area, therefore opt for a landscape horizontal orientation in a rectangular shape. A significant square wall can accommodate a square piece of artwork, etc. Have a look at the shape of the area you are attempting to fill and select the artwork of the exact same form.
4. Determine Your Spacing & Height
If you are creating a gallery with several frames alongside one another, distance the frames 1 1/2″ to 2″ apart. Take this dimension into consideration before buying your art so that you know how much room you will have left for the artwork itself, and therefore, what size to buy. When it comes to hanging artwork, if it is hung too large, it may look very awkward and take away from the beauty! When hanging art above a couch or other piece of furniture, place the bottom of this frame anywhere from 6″-12″ over the furniture.

5. Go Beyond the Canvas
When searching for artwork to fill your walls, don’t restrict yourself to print or canvas art. There are so many types of objects that work well on walls and function as art, like tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique shutters, classic doors, as well as architectural pediments! When shopping online, these types of things are often listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so you might have to correct your search somewhat, but be open to all of the options before searching for the right artwork for your area.

6. Select Your Color Scheme
The color of this artwork that you choose is critical, as it ought to work with your home’s overall colour scheme and surrounding decoration.
1 word of caution: I would refrain from surfing online websites by colour. In my experience, if you filter out of colour, you’ll only see a fraction of the artwork available that might have colors that work for your home because if the retailer doesn’t tag its colour when they load it in their system, it won’t appear on your search! Also, occasionally, art gets labeled exclusively by the color of the main picture, not the background. So for example, I was looking for blue artwork and several pieces were filtered out that had a blue skies or blue rivers because they’re deemed secondary, but for me personally, those images would fit my requirements.
Can you think this did not appear in my search for”blue”? I’d have missed it when I had filtered by color!

7. Set the Mood
The mood of your art will affect the mood of your room, so be sure to take it into consideration for the room in which you’re going to use it. For instance, modern art is often lively and high-energy, foggy riverbanks evoke a sombre atmosphere, critters can be whimsical, etc.. A gorgeous canvas depicting a misty mountain might be the ideal size and color to your space, but if you are hanging it in a children’s playroom, it might not be the right energy for the space.
In all honesty, one of my favorite places to find art is HomeGoods, however as you may know with that shop, the selection is hit or miss. They have bits of sizes and fashions, and the prices are unbeatable, but it is only luck if you come across just the correct thing for your house, which explains why I frequently shop online. Below are some of my favourite places to look for artwork, in no particular order.
Again, picking home art logo is very private, but the objective is that you appreciate it and for this to be the right size, shape, and color for your property. Are there exceptions to the rules above? Of course! What will life be without some variety?!
