1. Buy What You Love
Just like with everything in your house, things you own should appeal to you — you ought to love them! Art, in particular, is very personal, and each piece is supposed to evoke an emotion and a feeling and be personal to you. Above all, you should truly love the artwork that you select, and thus don’t buy anything just because it is the ideal size or price. Make sure you love it!
And do not be afraid to go in a different direction if you discover what you love. You may not understand why you enjoy something, or you might think that it’s out of your comfort zone, but don’t let this stop you.
2. Determine Your Scale Size
Choosing the right size is key, and every situation differs, but a general guideline is for the artwork to fill 1/2 to 3/4 of their space. For contemporary art, consider going even larger, as this art style lends itself to creating a bold statement both in terms of the artwork itself, but also the dimensions of this canvas. If large-scale artwork is not in your budget, consider employing several, smaller pieces of art grouped.

3. Select Your Orientation
As a general rule of thumb, select your artwork to complement the shape of this room. Therefore a tall, narrow wall may look best using a portrait vertical orientation using a rectangular form. Conversely, many people like to hang artwork over the couch, which can be a long rectangular space, therefore choose a landscape horizontal orientation in a rectangular form. A significant square wall can accommodate a square bit of art, etc. Have a look at the shape of the space you are attempting to fill and select the art of the same shape.
4. Determine Your Spacing & Height
If you’re creating a gallery with several frames next to one another, distance the frames 1 1/2″ to two ″ apart. Take this measurement into account before purchasing your artwork so you know how much room you will have left for the artwork itself, and so, what size to purchase. When it comes to hanging artwork, if it’s hung too large, it may look quite awkward and take away in the beauty! Always hang art so that the centre of this artwork rests at eye level, around 65″, give or take. When hanging art over a sofa or other piece of furniture, put the base of the frame anywhere from 6″-12″ over the furniture.

5. Move past the Canvas
When searching for artwork to fill your walls, do not limit yourself to print or canvas art. There are many types of items that work nicely on walls and function as art, like tobacco baskets, quilts, mirrors, antique dividers, classic doors, and even architectural pediments! When shopping on the internet, these kinds of items are usually listed under”Wall Decor” instead of”Wall Art” so that you might need to correct your look a bit, but you should be open to all of the options before searching for the right artwork for your space.

6. Pick Your Color Scheme
The color of this art that you select is critical, as it needs to work with your home’s overall color scheme and surrounding decoration.
1 word of caution: I would refrain from surfing online sites by color. In my experience, if you filter out of color, you’ll only see a fraction of the artwork available that may have colours that work for your home because if the retailer doesn’t tag its color when they load it into their system, it won’t show up on your hunt! Also, occasionally, art becomes tagged only by the colour of the main picture, not the background. So for example, I was looking for blue art and several bits were filtered out that had a blue skies or blue rivers as they’re considered secondary, but for me, those pictures would fit my requirements.
Would you believe this didn’t show up in my search for”blue”? I’d have missed it when I had filtered by color!

7. Set the Mood
The mood of your artwork will impact the mood of your room, so be sure to bring it into account for the room in which you’re going to be using it. For instance, contemporary art is often lively and high-energy, foggy riverbanks evoke a sombre atmosphere, critters can be whimsical, etc.. A gorgeous picture depicting a misty mountain might be the ideal size and colour to your space, but if you’re hanging it in a children’s playroom, it may not be the right energy for your space.
8. Know Where to Shop
In all honesty, one of my favourite areas to find artwork is HomeGoods, but as you may know with that store, the choice is hit or miss. They have pieces of sizes and fashions, and the prices are unbeatable, but it’s just luck if you encounter just the correct thing for your home, which explains why I frequently shop online. Below are a few of my favourite places to search for artwork, in no particular order.
Again, picking missing home art is very private, but the goal is for you to love it and for it to be the ideal size, shape, and colour for your home. Are there exceptions to the rules above? Of course! What would life be without a sort?! But these tips should help get you started in the right direction to put the finishing touches on your space.
